Anti fungal cream

Candida or fungal overgrowth on the rise? Anti fungal cream for Athletes’ foot, muscle aches, fatigue, bloating thrush? Fundal overgrowth affects the body. Here’s how, why and here’s what you can do without the candida diet.

What’s the real story?

Symptoms of candidiasis vary depending on the area of the body that is infected. London Naturopath Susannah follows client’s health story. For simple solutions we need to retrace steps. Find patterns in our health.

Why does this matter?

Then we can optimise what is helping us and eliminate what is hindering us. Until we can start from scratch and start eating wider ranges of foods. All the while, nourishing our bodies properly is key. Sound difficult? It’s not, with the right guidance.

We’ve finally made it. We’re at our doctor’s. Hands up. Who’s gone away with a prescription for an anti fungal cream for any of the above?
complementary health specialist may well say that we’re suffering from an overgrowth of candida or candida albicans. This can only be beaten In The Four Phases.

Candida albicans

Candida albicans is a topic of high debate between complementary therapists and the medical community. Mainly, because diagnosing the presence of candida albicans was inaccurate. Almost everyone has some yeast living in their digestive tract. Not so much now, in the right care, using the right clinical and functional approach.

Diagnosis by symptoms can be accurate. However, it’s just not enough data to functionally treat candida overgrowth. If an anti-candida programme makes symptoms vanish or improve, this can confirm the diagnosis of yeast overgrowth. Many a naturopath relies on this elimination diagnosis to treat fungal overgrowth.

Candida overgrowth symptoms

If we’ve got digestive issues like chronic diarrhoea or IBS or constipation, candidiasis may play a role.    [tweetthis]Digestive issues? Chronic #diarrhoea #IBS #constipation – #candidiasis may play a role[/tweetthis]

It’s the same with acid reflux or a sluggish metabolism. Similarly, when we’re not losing weight or not burning fat efficiently. Being tired all the time, harbouring that gut too. How common are all of these though, in modern times? We can see how easy it is to include or exclude reasons that might the key to improving these symptoms by eating differently IN THE FOUR PHASES.

Candida albicans or fungal overgrowth is diet and lifestyle acquired. Therefore, the functional approach to treating candida overgrowth requires changes to diet and lifestyle.

Functional analysis

Making complex carbohydrates even more difficult to break down is mentioned as part of the functional approach. This is the theory with Gut and Psychology Syndrome GAPS and Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). The organic acids test is a really good place to start.

The idea is if you have a fungal overgrowth, you should avoid disaccharides and polysaccharides. That’s because they’re difficult to break down and they may potentially feed these overgrowths or infections.

The idea is to resume microbial balance. That’s really the focus of any kind of treatment for fungal overgrowth.

How to balance hormones

How to balance hormones

Here’s how to balance hormones. Female sex hormone levels drop up to 90% during the ageing process. How to balance hormones as we age starts with recognising symptoms of hormone imbalance. We go through this here too. When we’re not feeling our normal self we use functional tests to make sure we have the right hormone reset diet as well as any supporting treatment options available.

How to use the pill

The pill is used by 3.5 mil in the UK currently – roughly one in three women of reproductive age. So are we using The Pill for birth control now more than ever? This figure is over 10 mil women in the US.
The oral contraceptive is particularly popular in the 18 to 30 age group. Usage of the Pill declines sharply after the age of 35.

Are women destined to suffer? Suffering from mood wings, muscle loss, poor sleep, memory difficulties, sexual problems? PMS, menopausal symptoms and other problems are all signs of female hormone imbalance.

This is manageable. Not the result of mutant genes destroying our sexual vitality as we age. At Susannah Makram Clinics we focus on what’s creating these imbalances – and mange the underlying problem In The Four Phases.

Modern medicine

The Pill

With gum disease existing in nearly half of this population, research investigating the relationship between the pill and gum disease provides us with a timely warning.
We need to consider the impact that oral contraception may have – not only on our dental health – but in terms of overall female hormone imbalance.

Side Effects of Birth control

Side Effects of Birth control

How to balance hormones

Birth Control Pills

Do birth control pills invariably lead to a female hormone imbalance? Let’s start at the start!
Research into the birth control pill’s effect on the mouth shows altered levels of salivary proteins and immune function.
This immunity acts as the mouth’s protection mechanisms against disease.
So when this immunity is lowered it can allow bad bacteria, housed in plaque on the surface of teeth and gums, to increase inflammation of the gingival tissues.
This is especially the case when bad bacteria are not removed properly by brushing and flossing. Hormonal changes that occur whilst taking the birth control pill also alter the blood supply to the gum tissues. This results in an increased inflammatory response to the presence of dental plaque.

Because gum disease doesn’t stop at your mouth, having regular dental health checks are advisable. Gum disease has known links to wider health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease, that are well established.

Research has shown that taking the birth control pill or combined oral contraceptives for 12 months or more can increase your susceptibility to gum disease. However, this depends on the condition being present in the first place. So if you’re looking after your dental hygiene well, you most likely won’t be affected by the increased risk that the pill may introduce.

Take home advice. Have a complete dental check-up and notify your dentist that you’re considering commencing the pill. Consult with your GP on the risks and side effects of different contraception pills. If you’re diagnosed with gingivitis or gum disease, you may want to post-pone commencing the pill until your disease levels are under control. Maintain diligent oral hygiene in order to keep your gum health in top shape, with regular 6-month dental check ups.

Female hormone imbalance

Hormone imbalance –our body’s internal rhythmic responses to external stressors. When we talk about female hormone imbalance we are referring to sex hormones. These have the general role in the body of growth and reproduction. In particular, the female sex hormones oestrogen and progestin are known to influence physiological outcomes like libido, fatigue, hair loss, mood levels and brittle bones. Due to this influence on the body’s processes, it’s well known that possible side effects and risks of taking the birth control pill, which alters these hormones, can include chronic diseases. An in-depth look at side effects of the pill is here.  Hormone imbalance symptoms can stem from such chronic diseases as heart disease, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer.

Functional nutrition is powerful through its holistic approach. Personalised nutrition aims to achieve the highest expression of individual health, so while this is a list of symptoms, we should only look at the surface. We might ask yourself if the following plague us and if we want to do something about it.

We may have a mild or moderate or severe female hormone imbalance. So, this is only a guide. For example, the more of these health concerns or issues you are experiencing, the more you might be looking at a female home imbalance that is treatable using the right personalised nutrition.

Nutrition for skin

Healthy glowing skin is what we all want. It makes us comfortable no matter what. It gives us that confidence every time we step out. We ooze sex appeal. We all know that one person whose skin glows with no filters.

If we don’t feel comfortable in our own skin, we end up spending too much of our precious time hiding or concealing our skin issues.

  1. If you want to heal your skin, first and foremost, you have to heal your gut.
  2. Hormonal balance – The Body Youth Code talks about this balancing act.
  3. Genetics are primer essential to use in the building blocks of healthy skin foundation.
  4. Advanced Glycation End Products and oxidative stress are easy to zap after 1,2,3.

Nutrition for skin or personalised nutrition for healthy skin is all about the tweaks here and there that make your diet unique. There are several mechanisms that enable The Body Youth Code to turn on your body’s amazing ability to break down and assimilate nutrients. When Susannah carefully selects these for you in a way that doesn’t overcomplicate your lifestyle, you feel empowered. This is when our nutrition for skin can actually reverse signs of ageing or target specific conditions such as acne, psoriasis eczema etc.

Our skin is a dynamic, continuously self renewing organ. Our skin is the largest organ of the human body & so it must be taken care of at every stage of life.

Healthy skin diet

The skin microbiome consists of resident and transient microbes. Making sure that the skin barrier, normal resident flora and immune responses are intact keeps these microbes in check.

Epidemiological evidence shows a clear association between gut problems and skin disorders.
If you want to heal your skin, you have to heal your gut.
In order to heal your gut, you have to correctly identify the reason for any dysfunction.

After 25 years begins the natural biological process of ageing of an organism and this process begins with the skin.

Or skin gradually loses its elasticity due to the lack of collagen and elastin.

In other words, the quantity of collagen fibres, responsible for the elasticity of the skin decreases with time.
The remaining fibres we have become incapable of retaining as much moisture as before. Because of this our skin becomes drier and looks older. Our skin doesn’t regenerate properly, showing lowered immune functions.

Nutrition for your skin type

How often do we hear this at skincare counters or when we go for facial? Well, the same goes for nutrition for skin. Sure, there may be some hard and fast rules that everyone can take home but we believe, like you, in individual care.

Just like there’s bacteria on skin we also have bacteria in our gut that’s responsible for how our skin and body respond to food, stresses and our environment. The functional approach to healthy skin explains why we might have the best diet in the world but still have so-so skin.
Susannah wants to give your skin the best possible refreshed, revitalised glow. Non porous skin looks better under any lighting. When we create the right internal environment by nutrition for skin our skin responds readily in a way that protects.

Without addressing the underlying causes of your skin issues, even the healthiest diet leaves your skin defenceless and prone to all kinds of damage that is harder to repair with time. Who wants to wave a flag at negative influences of our environment when we should be enjoying our holiday in sunny climates? Our skin becomes more vulnerable over time. If we don’t take good care of it now it won’t carry out the function of a being a barrier to these negative influences, as it did in our younger age.

nutrition for skin

nutrition for skin

Wrinkles, low turgor and unhealthy discolourations of our skin signal we need to give our skin more care. We want to help you build the best foundation to the point that you are confident you know more about your body and more about your skin. You will be able to reasonably judge what signs of aging are part of a natural process and what signs aren’t.
Most of all we want to give you the power to have the right nutrition dos and don’ts that will actually make a difference you can see, a difference you can measure.

Not enough iron means red blood cells are fewer and smaller. So, they’re not transporting sufficient O2 where it needs to go. If you suspect that you may be iron deficient, make an appointment with your doctor. He or she will probably look for signs of anemia or anaemia such as pale skin, irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing, capillary refill. They might also do an exam to check for internal bleeding. However, most commonly, iron deficiency is found by doing a blood test that tests for hemoglobin and hematocrit levels.

Heme iron

CAN WE GET A VEGAN RECIPE with heme iron? Heme iron is found in meats, fish, and poultry. This type of iron is in foods that contain hemoglobin. The body absorbs 7-35% of heme iron.

Non heme iron

This is found in plant foods. The body absorbs 2-20% of non-heme iron. The percentage is lower because non-heme iron is more sensitive to other dietary factors that may limit its absorption. You can be inspired by vegan recipes to eat such iron rich plant foods.
One research study showed that by adding just 63mg of vitamin C (the amount in ½ of a bell pepper or 1 small orange) to a meal, iron absorption from plant foods tripled. Vitamin C is an acid, ascorbic acid and acids increase the bioavailability of the iron.

It is possible to eat lots of iron rich plant foods or animal-based foods and still be anemic or anaemic. Often this is because of a weakened digestive system due to celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease IBS, or other conditions that cause insufficient stomach acid. In these cases, 25-50 mg of daily iron supplementation may be recommended. Always check with your doctor for specific recommendations.

In fact some studies show that vegans consume as much iron as omnivores and sometimes more.

Although iron needs can be met completely with non heme iron it is important to pay attention to all the factors that may affect absorption.     [tweetthis]Iron needs can be met completely on #vegan diets Know factors affecting absorption[/tweetthis]

This is especially the case if someone is iron deficient. While meat protein nearly doubles the absorption of non-heme iron vitamin C is even more effective in increasing absorption.

Lower iron levels

Tannins found in tea leaves, red grapes, chocolate and coffee block the absorption of iron by about 50% (study here). However, consuming these foods an hour before or an hour after the iron rich meal has no effect on iron absorption. Vegan recipes can be inspiring ways to get more plat based iron rich foods combined with the right amounts of vitamin C.
Phytates are important antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents found in highest quantities in wheat bran, soybeans, peanuts, pinto beans, kidney beans etc. Phytates bind to non-heme iron and lower its absorption. But soaking, fermenting, sprouting, and cooking all reduce phytate content by 50-75%.
Calcium Supplements & Dairy Foods compete with iron for uptake in your intestinal tract
Zinc and Manganese supplements
Peppermint and Chamomile
Antacids decrease iron absorption because they reduce stomach acid
Whole egg protein

Preventing lower back pain. Checking in to avoid checking out.
Usually, the first thing one in three people suffering with low back pain relate to is the frustration. If only we were told. If only we were warned how much time they would lose. If only they knew they’d have to skip work. As leaders or employers, running a business… Can you imagine? Not being able to work because of low back pain?

How to fix lower back pain

Sometimes we get muscle strains and ligament sprains. They can affect our quality of life. There are differences between the two but both are dealt with very differently from person to person.

We could have the exact same diagnosis or prognosis as the next person but our experience of lower back pain is different. This is why improving our quality of life is one of the these two, depending on you and not depending on your diagnosis.

1) a check up

2) a health journey

Low back pain

There are some warning signs to be aware of. Lower back pain can need urgent medical attention. Know the signs and spare yourself and your family, long lasting, life threatening, or potentially disabling disease or health complications.

Innovative ways to categorise and measure pain are currently being studied. For example, scientists are using computer-assisted technology to develop a novel programme that will capture and quantify pain experiences. Tools such as this will be combined with existing methods to more accurately and consistently measure pain over time and across groups, diseases, and conditions.

Lower back pain treatment

Lower back pain treatment

  • The diversity of pain conditions requires a diversity of research and treatment approaches.
  • According to the National Center for Health Statistics (2006), approximately 76.2 million, one in every four Americans, have suffered from pain that lasts longer than 24 hours and millions more suffer from acute pain.
  • Pain can be a chronic disease, a barrier to cancer treatment, and can occur alongside other diseases and conditions (e.g. depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury).
  • Pain affects more Americans than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined. Pain is cited as the most common reason Americans access the health care system.

Feeling tired all the time or anxious or restless is more common in people experiencing pain e.g. lower back pain. How can we help you feel refreshed and full of energy?

Low back pain can creep in, where a little tiredness may have been.

Bad sleep quality and quantity can wreck or strengthen our bodies. If sleep can cause such dysfunction to our bodies then what about pain? Checking in for osteopathy before this happens makes sense.

Key Thyroid Symptoms

Thyroid Symptoms

THYROID PROBLEMS – overactive thyroid symptoms or underactive thyroid can be overlooked or mismanaged.
WHY IS THIS?

TSH IS A HORMONE secreted from the anterior pituitary gland to control THYROID FUNCTION.
Symptoms of thyroid problems are manageable when working with the medical community – at Susannah Makram Clinics .
Optimal THYROID FUNCTION or functional health impacts lifestyle quality.

Hormone Panel

Hormone Panel

The thyroid gland is a vitally important hormonal gland. It plays a major role in:- our metabolism, growth and maturation of our bodies.
WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW  exactly what’s going on? Because the hormones released affect our body’s overall ability to function. The gland reacts to our environment. Hormones secreted affect how we use the MACRONUTRIENT and MICRONUTRIENTS impacting how we feel, our weight, our energy levels etc.

Thyroid Functional Health

WHY not WHAT.
We might be on a seemingly great diet. We’re taking the right supplements and doing everything to take ownership and feel better. However, we’re still not really making any progress. How frustrating if all it took was making small change.

Hypothyroidism – Disorder

Fatigue is a common symptom of an underactive thyroid but it is also a symptom of many other associated conditions. These include adrenal fatigue, food sensitivities and various nutrient deficiencies.
Underactivity in adults often develops gradually. This is why people might not notice symptoms for a while. Possible symptoms can include the following.

General loss of energy and power; Difficulties concentrating or mental slowness
Slowed metabolism; Tiredness; Being overweight
Constipation
Sensitivity to cold; Slow pulse
Waxy skin thickening and swelling (myxedema)
Dry skin
Deep, hoarse voice
Brittle, dry hair
Loss of sexual desire or potency problems; Sometimes even depression

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

A condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a chronic inflammation of the thyroid. It can also lead to underactivity.
Often people with Hashimoto’s will be started on thyroid hormones but continue to feel tired.

Overactivity of the gland is also called hyperthyroidism. It produces too many hormones. This speeds up energy metabolism. The following symptoms can occur.

Hot flashes; Sweating; Trembling
Weight loss
Diarrhoea
Hair loss
Nervousness, Hyperactivity; Emotional instability and irritability or fatigue
Insomnia and restlessness
Potency problems
Racing heart

Top Thyroid tests

Top 6 Thyroid Tests

Here is a comprehensive list to take to your doctor.

  1. TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)
  2. Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Antibodies)
  3. Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TG Antibodies)
  4. Thyroid Ultrasound
  5. Free T3
  6. Free T41 or Free T4

You can ask for tests for Hashimoto’s and hypothyroidism. Request a copy of your thyroid labs. Then you can see them and ensure they are interpreted correctly.

TSH is a pituitary hormone. TSH responds to low/high amounts of circulating thyroid hormone. This is in advanced cases of Hashimoto’s and primary hypothyroidism. In the case of Graves’ disease the TSH will be low. People with Hashimoto’s and central hypothyroidism may have a normal reading on this test.

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Antibodies) and Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TG Antibodies)
Most people with Hashimoto’s will have an elevation of one or both of these antibodies. These antibodies are often elevated for decades before a change in TSH is seen. People with Graves’ disease and thyroid cancer may also have an elevation in thyroid antibodies including TPO & TG, as well as TSH receptor antibodies.

Thyroid Ultrasound-
A small percentage of people may have Hashimoto’s. However, they may not have thyroid antibodies detectible in the blood. Doing a thyroid ultrasound will help your physician determine a diagnosis.

Free T3 & Free T4
These tests measure the levels of active thyroid hormone circulating in the body. When TSH is informal range but free T3 and T4 levels are low, this may lead your doctor might suspect central hypothyroidism (a rare type of hypothyroidism).

Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

Psoriasis

Psoriasis in any form can leave you feeling stressed, frustrated and oftentimes ashamed. Covering up psoriasis can be a challenge. Psoriasis is not the only skin flaking scalp condition. Three of the most common scalp conditions tend to cause flaking. These are psoriasis, eczema and seborrheic dermatitis.
It’s difficult in the City where we tend to wear darker shades of suit in when most publicly exposed. I see scalp psoriasis in naturopathy clinic in Knightsbridge typically with CEOs travelling. In Mayfair and Harley Street naturopathy clinics I’m seeing more males in the City struggling to keep scalp psoriasis at bay.

Scalp Psoriasis in The City

Scalp Psoriasis in The City

Psoriasis is a non-contagious, auto-immune condition. It is characterised by skin redness and irritation. Plaque psoriasis is the most common presentation.
Scalp psoriasis treatment needs to be managed using a complete care system. This is because scalp psoriasis affects about 50% of psoriasis sufferers. The thick plaques can extend down from the hairline to the forehead.

Scalp psoriasis can be uncomfortable, if extremely itching. At Susannah Makram clinics we have found, more commonly, there to be a stigma and embarrassment surrounding flaking and skin scales. Psoriasis tends to be a chronic problem, lasting many years, unless it is treated using a functional approach In The Four Phases.

Approximately 60% of psoriasis patients missed an average of 26 days of work a year due to their illness. This study demonstrated that income and employment were negatively impacted among patients with severe psoriasis. This was in comparison with mild psoriasis.

2-3% of the total population have psoriasis. This is according to the World Psoriasis Day consortium.       [tweetthis]2-3% Total population have psoriasis, according to the World Psoriasis Day consortium.[/tweetthis]

Studies show 10-30% of people with psoriasis also develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis is the most prevalent autoimmune disease in the U.S.

Do you think you might have it? Scalp psoriasis may not cause any symptoms at all so it’s easily missed. If it is itching, it is the most extreme. It often fluctuates in severity and extent.

The good news is psoriasis adapts to treatments quickly. There are a variety of internal and external paradoxical factors contributing to the clinical course of this disease. Like many skin conditions, therefore, it is not very well understood. So although psoriasis is commonly encountered, it is a challenge for conventional medicine alone.
A functional approach investigates this complex nature of the disease to find out WHAT is causing the symptoms – WHY do you have it NOW? What caused your psoriasis in the first place might not be what is causing the flare ups today.

Normally, T cells travel throughout the body to detect and fight off foreign substances. The foreign substances come from viruses or bacteria. If you have psoriasis, however, the T cells attack healthy skin cells by mistake. This is the same action happening to heal a wound or fight an infection. Autoimmune diseases generally respond well to an anti-inflammatory diet. Anti inflammatory diets work best once bad bacteria in the gut are killed off.

Cold Press Juicer

Fast Fact. A Cold Press Juicer is also known as a Masticating Juicer or Slow Juicer.
Fast Fact. A Cold Press Juicer slowly compresses fruits and vegetables to ‘squeeze’ out the juice instead of using high-speed force to separate juice from pulp like a centrifugal juicer does.

  • Cold pressed juice uses hydraulic pressure to extract juice, gaining a larger yield.
  • Cold pressers make it far easier to fully extract the juice from leafy greens like kale and spinach. You can see how in the video above.
  • Cold pressed juice London is a way of life. Cold pressed juice is a fast and safe way to have our macronutrientsmicronutrients and phytonutrients to hand. Texture-wise, this is a unique experience. Cold pressed juice is smooth and differs from fresh juice. Fresh juice is likely to have bits in the juice. Each cold pressed juice is a unique tasting experience and consistency.
  • As no heat is applied to the fruit or vegetable, there is less oxidisation. The enzymes and nutrients remain live for 3 – 5 days.

Raw Food Juice

  • Cold Pressed Juice is likely made by a method that is called high-pressure pascalisation (HPP), which uses high-pressure chambers instead of heat to inhibit microflora growth. HPP is less destructive than traditional heat processes. It also naturally extends shelf life and so these juice cannot be classified as fresh or raw.
  • Hydraulic juice presses (or cold-pressing) crush and then press fruits and vegetables in a two-step process. The video above shows the two-step method that produces raw cold pressed juice.
  • Cold-pressing simply means that the juice is extracted by crushing the fruit or vegetable, and then pressing it to get the highest yield of juice. This is all done in a cold setting. This way no nutrients in the fruit or vegetable are damaged and enzymes stay intact.
