Most people normally shed 50 to 100 hairs a day. This does not usually cause noticeable thinning of scalp hair because new hair is growing in at the same time. Shedding significantly >50-100 hairs daily=person has excessive hair shedding.

Hair shedding often stops on its own. When the body sheds significantly more hairs every day, a person has excessive hair shedding. The medical term for this condition is telogen effluvium.

Excessive hair shedding is common in people who have experienced one the following stressors:

  • Stopped taking birth-control pills
  • Recovering from an illness, especially if had a high fever
  • Undergone an operation
  • Had high fever
  • Experiencing lots of stress (Caring for a loved one who is sick, going through a divorce, losing a job)

Where did your healthy lustrous locks go? Hair loss differs from hair thinning. Hair loss occurs when the normal cycle of hair growth and shedding is disrupted or when the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with scar tissue. We can categorise the reasons for hair loss as being related to one or more of the following four factors:

How to stop hair loss

Because of the hormone imbalances associated with PCOS (high insulin, high androgens or hyperandrogenism, low progesterone, and imbalanced ratio of 0estrogen to progesterone), women can suffer from Female Pattern Hair Loss. High levels of testosterone reduces the rejuvenation of the hair follicles in the scalp alone.

Susannah2Hair loss occurs when something stops the hair from growing. The medical term for this condition is anagen effluvium. The most common causes of hair loss in detail include:

  • Hereditary hair loss
  • Immune system overreacts
  • Some drugs and treatments (e.g. chemotherapy)
  • Hairstyles that pull on the hair
  • Harsh hair care products
  • Compulsion to pull out one’s hair
