Best Sunscreen

Best Sunscreen

The most important term to look for on the best sunscreen label is “broad spectrum”.
“Broad spectrum” coverage signifies coverage against both UVA and UVB rays.
The SPF should be 30 or higher.

All Alumier MD sunscreens start at 40 SPF.
Find out which one is right for you. Receive your personal recommendation by selecting the E-Book Gift for SKIN.

An SPF of 30 blocks 96.7% of UV rays so that only 3.3% will get through, compared with an SPF of 15 which blocks 93.3% of UV rays and lets through 6.7% – twice as much. So what’s the best sunscreen?

Sunscreen is also a must for protecting the skin from free radicals. However, sunscreens only protect up to 55%, not 100%, of free radicals. (Haywood, R., et al, J Invest Dermatol 2006;121:862-868)

The Problem with Parabens

Parabens are a group of widely used synthetic preservatives found in cosmetics, deodorants, antiperspirants. They’re easily absorbed into the skin. Parabens are believed to be endocrine disruptors.

Methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben are the most commonly used parabens in cosmetics.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals. They can interfere with the body’s endocrine (hormone) system. This produces adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, immune effects. Research shows that endocrine disruptors may pose the greatest health risk during prenatal and early postnatal development (NIH – National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences).

AlumierMD

Parabens mimic oestrogen. Concerns exist as to how this may affect certain cancers in women and hormone levels in young girls. Parabens were first detected in human breast tissue in 2004 (Darbre et al.). A more recent study has found their presence in all areas of breast tissue (Barr et al 2012). This tissue presence is a cause for concern regarding breast cancer.

The Best Sunscreen

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an American environmental organisation that specialises in research and advocacy in areas including toxic chemicals. They’re a non-profit, non-partisan organisation dedicated to protecting human health and the environment (www.ewg.org). They’ve created the Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. This rates products and ingredients according to their safety. Every product and ingredient is given a hazard score and a data availability score.

The Hazard Score

The hazard score, from 1-10 reflects known and suspected hazards of ingredients:

1-2 = low hazard, 3-6 = moderate hazard 7-10 high hazard. The data availability rating takes into account the number of published studies in the scientific literature.

Ingredient safety is calculated using both the hazard and data availability scores. Therefore, the safest ingredients will have low hazard ratings as well as fair, good or robust data availability. So, keep an eye out for these when looking for the best sunscreen.

Unfortunately, parabens most used in most products are rated as moderately-highly hazardous with limited safety data on the EWG rating scale.

PROPYLPARABENBUTYLPARABENISOBUTYLPARABEN and ISOPROPYLPARABEN have all been given a high hazard score of 7 with a limited to fair amount of data. METHYLPARABEN and ETHYLPARABEN got a moderate hazard score of 4 with limited data.

Consider the potential health risks of parabens. Also the fact that there are much safer alternatives available. Why should we risk our health?

Candida Diet Problem

The problem with the candida diet

GAPSGut And Psychology Syndrome diet SCD and other very low-carbohydrate diets ALL do ONE thing. A typical Candida diet REMOVES every possible source of GLUCOSE or SUGAR in the diet. This can lead to ketone production.

Studies, for example, show that neutrophils, which are white blood cells, are less able to kill Candida when ketones are present. There are studies of diabetic patients with ketoacidosis—a lot of ketone production—developing Candida overgrowth.

Candida Diet

There are studies of obese people developing Candida albicans infections when fasting causes ketosis. So there’s evidence pointing to the idea that KETONE PRODUCTION is not a good idea.

Personalised nutrition

The organic acids test is a really good place to start. WHY? Because your personalised nutrition plan CAN work – over time (ask us how long) as we keep it simple, focusing on your health story.

All health professionals agree that candida albicans is a yeast living in the gut and in the vagina. Normally it causes no serious problems there. It’s one of many microbes – known as gut flora – that colonise the large intestine.

When the balance of this flora is disrupted – most commonly by antibiotics – the “good” microbes may be killed off, allowing harmful ones including candida albicans, to proliferate. The first result is likely to be vaginal thrush.

candida albicans

candida albicans

Susannah is among naturopaths or the naturopathic community who believe this yeast can’t be ignored. It needs consideration in the systems review for certain illnesses. The medical profession largely dismiss such claims. They insist that in people with a normal immune system, candida causes problems only in the throat and vagina.

The right host (genetics may play a part here) and given the right conditions, candida can erupt into systemic candidiasis. This can affect many parts of the body. Candida albicans can multiply by feeding on undigested sugars and starch and change from a yeast to a fungus.

Candida triggers

Disordered microbial balance has various triggers. Candida triggers include antibiotic use, the pill, HRT, steroids, stress and a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar bachelor schreiben lassen. Candida can produce gases and waste products and sometimes alcohol. ‘Leaky gut’ can result when it uses its roots – hyphae – to penetrate through mucosal barriers and into tissues. This allows poisonous waste products to gain access to the bloodstream.

The bloating or discomfort we feel along with tiredness is from the large food molecules that are incompletely digested.

The immune system is triggered into action when this happens ghostwriter seminararbeit. It causes inflammation, excess mucous production and many of the symptoms associated with candida albicans.

Candida symptoms

Candida symptoms are food intolerance, fatigue, hormonal irregularities, headaches and arthritis. If the immune system is overloaded and compromised by stress, it fails to meet the challenge akademisches ghostwriting. So yeast problems or candida albicans persist.

It’s this list of diverse symptoms that patients take to their GP hausarbeit schreiben lassen kosten.  It’s unlikely that the words candida albicans will be mentioned. Naturopaths and osteopaths like Susannah become specialised in treating chronic illness and chronic pain, for this reason.

In the four phases

Have you had a single episode of thrush and then never again? The nature of treating fungal overgrowth keeps to In The Four Phases rigidly because fungal overgrowth is commonly recurrent ghostwriting preise. Rebuilding your beneficial gut bacteria is a vital part of getting rid of fungal overgrowth or candida albicans overgrowth for good.

Vitamix Recipes

Healthy snack recipe inspiration needed? Look no further! We’re in season — bikini season, bikini body, healthy body ready all year round. HERE’S THE REAL STORY: consuming nutrient rich snack foods doesn’t always rely on Vitamix recipes.

Nutribullet recipes make things like healthy smoothies and raw food recipes easy. So a vitamix blender and a nutribullet are handy. But here’s the best part!…

They’re not for everyone.
Susannah, nutrition expert, shares some lesser known nutritious and delicious foods to eat. better still, you can eat healthy on the go. Nutrient dense foods fill you and keep blood sugar levels stable in between meals.

Healthy Snacks

Activated nuts – how? Why should we eat activated nuts? If we’ve got unsalted nuts, they can be great to top up on good fats and minerals like zinc. Zinc is an amazing blood sugar stabiliser. It’s really hard to get zinc in our day-to-day modern lifestyle and diets. Selenium, magnesium and calcium, antioxidants and gluten free and wheat free fiber or fibre.
We can activate our own nuts…

Why does this matter — here’s the deal:

Healthy Snack Recipes

Why would we activate nuts if they’re so nutritious?  Nuts are healthy. Healthy snack recipes made with nuts are numerous! So let’s start with this awesome improvement on the nut ingredient itself. Nuts can contain phytic acid, enzyme inhibitors. Enzyme inhibitors act by binding to enzymes and decrease and/or block their actions. The enzyme inhibitors are beneficial to nuts, as they prevent the nuts from prematurely sprouting. However these same enzyme inhibitors also act on our body’s digestive enzymes, preventing proper digestion and absorption of all the nutty goodness of nuts.
Activated Seeds
Seeds also contain small amount of phytic acid, which our digestive system is also unable to break down. Eating large amounts of raw nuts or raw seeds can therefore sometimes lead to feeling ‘heavy’ or with a discomforting fullness, even nausea.
Recipe to Activate Nuts

OK, so it’s not a recipe as such. But here are the steps to follow to activate half a cup of nuts.
Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in enough water to cover the amount of nuts or seeds activating. For seeds add another half teaspoon of salt.
In a large bowl place the nut or seed of choice for activating and cover this with the salt water solution.
Soak for the required 6-7 hours.
Strain and rinse the nuts and seeds
Spread over a dehydrator rack, or baking tray.
Dry the nuts in the dehydrator for around 6-12 hours. 4-8 hours for seeds.
If drying in the oven, set the oven at the lowest temperature possible, preferably no more than 65C. Stir or turn them occasionally, for the required drying time.
The nuts and seeds should be crunchy. they should be tasty and now they’re bio-available nuts and seeds.

Fermented Foods Are More Digestible & Safer To Eat Than Many Raw Foods

eg. sauerkraut and cabbage – sources of probiotic and prebiotic – dairy free, raw, vegan food, respectively,

Recipe Sauerkraut

SINGLE JAR SAUERKRAUT RECIPE

Cabbage – 1 small to medium – approx 2 ounces
1 Tablespoon medium grain sea salt or non-iodised salt
1 Teaspoon caraway seeds, juniper berries (optional)

  1. Cut the cabbage in half. Cut out the thick core and stem end and compost or discard them.Thinly slice the cabbage into shreds or small pieces (think coleslaw)
  2. Loosely pack the sliced cabbage into a clean, wide mouth glass jars, sprinkling in the salt as well as the caraway seeds and juniper berries (if using) as you fill the jars. It is not necessary to sterilise the jars for lacto-fermented foods. the jars do have to be pristine clean, however. Pack the cabbage, salt and spices down firmly as you add them to the jar. Once the jar is almost full, loosely cover it and let it sit for 2 to 4 hours. During this time the salt should draw enough juice out of the cabbage to completely cover the solid food. If it doesn’t, top the kraut off with a brine made of 1 teaspoon non-iodised salt dissolved in 1 pint filtered or non-chlorinated water.
  3. Pour the salt brine, if necessary, over the cabbage and spices. Gently press down on the cabbage and spices to release any air bubbles and to submerge them in the brine. Cover the jar loosely with a lid. Place the jar on a plate to catch any overflow that may happen once active fermentation gets going. Leave the jars at room temperature for 3 days. During this time, remove the covers at least once a day and check to see that the vegetables are still submerged in the brine (add additional salt brine if necessary). You should start to see some bubbles on top – a sign that fermentation is underway.
  4. By the end of the 3 days, the sauerkraut should have a clean, lightly sour smell and taste. Put the jars in the refrigerator (no need to put plates under them at this stage). Wait at least 5 more days for the flavor of your sauerkraut to develop. This recipe also works well with red cabbage.

Fermented Vegetables – Why? Tangy tasting, mineral rich, nutritionally dense, gut healing to name a few… WORRIED YOU’RE NOT EATING ENOUGH FRUIT AND VEG? It’s too bloating? You’re missing out on this bloat-free gem.

Lacto-fermentation is the process that produces traditional dill pickles, kimchi and sauerkraut.

Lactic acid is a natural preservative that inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria.

The “lacto” portion of the term refers to a specific species of bacteria, namely Lactobacillus. Various strains of these bacteria are present on the surface of all plants, especially those growing close to the ground, and are also common to the gastrointestinal tracts, mouths, and vaginas of humans and other animal species.

Lactobacillus bacteria have the ability to convert sugars into lactic acid. The Lactobacillus strain is so named because it was first studied in milk ferments. These bacteria readily use lactose or other sugars and convert them quickly and easily to lactic acid. However, lacto-fermentation does not necessarily need to involve dairy products.

The Best Probiotics – 10 Check List

What is probiotics

We TAKE Probiotics for gut health so does what we EAT DRINK TAKE MAKE count towards our gut health? Our digestive problems or overall digestive health alone requires personalised nutrition. Here’s why…

best probiotic

best probiotic

FAQ: which is the best probiotic to take? How, when and even why we eat = nutrition and lifestyle habits = information. This feeds our or nourishes or bodies and informs our gut health and wellbeing. So let’s make choices that count towards OUR health.
Probiotics and Prescript Assist probiotics and antibiotics and probiotics and prebiotics – find out about them here

We have all that friend. They’re super healthy. They eat whole foods, they workout. Yet, they’re catching bugs or unwell. A lot. They look and feel tired all the time.

So this super healthy friend, eating seasonal whole foods – nutrient rich… outside their body. Inside? Useless.
Is this why we’re all taking Probiotics? Well, probiotics do far more than improve digestive function and our ability to stay ‘regular.’ Possibly, Probiotics are the best natural solution for eliminating bloating and puffiness. Probiotics are the safest way to get a healthier, flatter stomach. However, not all probiotics are created equal.

10 Tips For Choosing A High Quality Probiotic

1) Different Probiotics work in different ways. You should discuss what you want to achieve by taking probiotics safely.
2) It is important to Know The Strain. The most common strains you will find are bifidobacterium and lactobacillus. Medications that decrease the immune system (Immunosuppressants) interact with lactobacillus strains. Lactobacillus acidophilus is thought to help with the digestion and absorption of lactose by producing lactase. This may be helpful for those with Lactose intolerance – usually the result of a lactase deficiency.

Probiotics means ‘for life’

They are defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations as ‘live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts as part of food, confer a beneficial health effect by producing gut microflora on the host’.

Probiotics often are not that effective at re-populating the gut flora – Prebiotics are more effective for that. The health benefits of probiotics go beyond gut health.

Vegan Probiotics

If you are vegan it can be challenging to find a vegan probiotic. Some brands use milk in the manufacturing process, or have gelatin-derived capsules, or use bee products. It is not impossible, however, to find a vegan-friendly probiotic formula. It should be all of the following: (i) dairy free probiotic (ii) casein free probiotic (iii) gelatin free probiotic (iv) bee product free probiotic

If you are sensitive to dairy you can find dairy-free probiotics and increase your food intake of probiotics with these foods that are also vegan diet friendly: Ten Dairy Free Probiotic Foods

If you are taking antibiotics it is good to start a Saccharomyces boulardii or S. boulardii probiotic. Take these while still taking the antibiotic as this is a yeast strain (antibiotics cannot kill it). Taking these rather than bacteria and can help prepare the internal environment to welcome new “good” bacteria back into the body. This happens once the antibiotic has done its job of clearing bacteria from the body. There are quite a few randomised, placebo-controlled trials for e.g. here and here that have demonstrated the effectiveness of probiotic use during a course of antibiotics. This is specific for reducing side effects and preventing gut infection. Prebiotics are an important part of any regimen to protect or rebuild a healthy microbiome during and after antibiotic use.

The Best Probiotics - 10 Check List

The Best Probiotics – 10 Check List

3) Demonstrated safety in vivo and In Vitro Studies SBO probiotics have risen in recognition recently as clinical evidence grows to support their traditonally-derived approach. Species from the Bacillus genus, a gut-adapted spore-forming bacteria is found in certain probiotic products. It has been demonstrated to be safe and effective in in vitro and in vivo studies. 4) Clinical Trials – Many probiotic products have not been validated by peer-reviewed, clinical studies. The best products are those that have been studied in the scientific literature.

5) Shelf Stability – Probiotics should be shelf-stable i.e. do not require refrigeration. Many probiotics require refrigeration and lose their potency if not stored within a very narrow range of temperature and this is inconvenient in today’s modern, mobile world. A shelf-stable probiotic is easier to take consistently because you can take it with you wherever you go.

6) Strength – A superior delivery can more than compensate for a product with a lower CFU count i.e. Colony Forming Units. That said, a true probiotic effect involves a significant number of CFU (preferably 10 billion CFU or more per serving). This serving produces significant quantities of lactic acid within our intestinal tract. One of the roles of stomach acid is to prevent harmful bacteria from entering our bodies. However, stomach acid will also kill good bacteria that we swallow in the form of probiotics—unless the bacteria is protected from that acid in our stomachs. Delivery does not only mean making the probiotic go through the stomach alive. The best delivery systems keep the probiotics together in a protective gel as they move deep into the intestinal tract. The more pristine this gel state can be kept, in terms of allowing only probiotics to grow, the better. 7) Time Of Manufacture – always read the label. A time of manufacture guarantee declares the amount of CFUs in a probiotic at the time of production

The Best Probiotics - 10 Check List

The Best Probiotics – 10 Check List

8) Too Many Strains? The most effective probiotics contain several different strains of bacteria that work together synergistically to mimic the natural flora found in the human gut. A broad spectrum of bacterial chains is generally advised. This is unless specifications in point 2) apply e.g.of  broad spectrum is 29 strains of beneficial microflora
9) Viability. To repeat point 6) the good delivery system is required. This is for the probiotic product to remain viable on the shelf. Also, through the harsh acidic environment of the stomach —  delivering active, therapeutic levels at the time they reach the lower GI tract.
10) Value & Gluten Free & Dairy Free. Always read the label.

In the last ten years, studies of the human microbiome, have propelled our appreciation for studies into probiotics. The microbiome is defined as the collective genetic identity of the microbes. These microbes are composed of bacteria, bacteriophage, fungi, protozoa and viruses. They live inside and on the human body and provided us with much data. These bacteria help to balance pH and maintain immunity. They aid in absorption and synthesis of nutrients, to neutralise harmful compounds and produce short chain fatty acids. Short chain fatty acids play a role in the digestive process as well.

In summary, the health benefits of probiotic therapy depend on choice factors. The type of bacterium dosing regimen, delivery method and other underlying host factors. For e.g. the age and diet of the host. Really we cannot summarise this topic just yet: points 3) and 4) call for regular updates. This is an important part of delivering the best personalised nutritional plan for you.

Getting Pregnant – Facts For NOW

With 1 IN 6 Couples currently experiencing difficulty getting pregnant, Get The Gloss caught up with their Expert in Naturopathic Nutrition and osteopathySUSANNAH MAKRAM covers the facts we should all know before embarking on the road to fertility.

Infertility is a rising problem. According to recent statistics, ‘one in six couples has problems starting a family, with the number of couples seeking medical help having risen dramatically.’  [tweetthis hidden_hashtags=”#nutrition”]What you need to know now if you’re thinking about getting #pregnant[/tweetthis]

Fertility and lifestyle

Most experts suggest these increasing problems with couples trying to get pregnant are due to larger amounts of environmental chemicals. These chemicals affect the body’s hormones, in men and women. Also, societal and cultural changes see more women choosing to delay starting a family until established in their careers. The older both men and women become, the more likely it is to encounter difficulties conceiving, for the woman to become pregnant.

The problem however, is that unless specifically trying to get pregnant, most women don’t know enough about fertility and the factors that can affect our chances. So, with the aim of getting us all a little more clued-up we reached out to fertility and nutrition expert, Susannah Makram, for a little more information on the possibilities and problems getting pregnant.

SIBO and IBS

SIBO and IBS

IBS and SIBO can be confused. However, there is no denying the existence of SIBO by the medical community. Here’s how to fix SIBO after we confirm the tiredness and the bloating is causing it. To know what is SIBO is to know who’s likely to have it. When we have IBS the nerve endings in our gut are always firing. This creates a condition of visceral hypersensitivity, so our gut is more sensitive than it should be. What triggers this?
The link between our emotions and digestion system makes sense: the gut has been called our second brain. Our gut contains more nerve cells than even our spinal cords.
Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth aka SIBO refers to a condition whereby:

  1. Abnormally large numbers of bacteria (usually defined as at least 100,000 bacteria per ml of fluid) are present in the small intestine &
  2. The types of bacteria in the small intestine resemble more the bacteria of the colon than the small intestine.

How to fix SIBO

The majority of our gut bacteria should be in the colon. Bacteria can migrate backwards into the small intestine. Or, when there is low stomach acid or poor pancreatic enzyme production, bacteria in the small intestine can overgrow. When any of these happen it causes symptoms, such as diarrhoea, gas, or bloating.

Sibo and IBS

What are they? Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is one of more than 20 functional gastrointestinal disorders FGIDIBS and SIBO continued.

Studies show 50% patients diagnosed with IBS actually have an underlying imbalance called SIBO.

Symptoms IBS

Breaking research from UNC shows that IBS patients depending on their sub-type–or primary symptom such as constipation, diarrhea, bloating–have different clusters of microbes. i.e. Constipation predominant IBSers will have similar flora clusters compared to other IBS-C patients –and this differs compared to IBS-D patients etc.

Sibo symptoms

Do you wake up with a flat belly and by the end of the day look six months pregnant? Even if you have not experienced abdominal bloating to such an extreme, any amount of bloating is not normal. It is a sign of intestinal inflammation or poor gut health. If you are having gas and/or bloating regularly, you could have food sensitivities +/- a gut infection, such as SIBO. Certain strains of bacteria feed off of refined carbohydrates. These strains break them down into short-chain fatty acids, creating gas and causing bloating.

Another strain of bacteria can break down bile salts before your body has a chance to use them. Bile salts are crucial for the breakdown of fats. Without bile salts, the end result is fat malabsorption or diarrhea.

Finally, a third type of bacteria can produce toxins. These damage the lining of the small intestine. This prevents your body from absorbing the nutrients you need, much like what we see with a leaky gut.

10 Risk Factors For SIBO

  1. Low stomach acid 2. Irritable bowel syndrome 3. Coeliac disease (long-standing) 4. Crohn’s disease 5. Prior bowel surgery 6. Diabetes mellitus – Diabetes type I and Diabetes type II 7. Multiple courses of antibiotics 8. Organ system dysfunction, such as liver cirrhosis, chronic pancreatitis, or renal failure 9. Heavy alcohol use has long been recognised in association with SIBO 10. Overall there appears to be a moderate association between (the) Oral Contraceptive Pill (s) OCPs and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s disease and likely, given links, therefore SIBO
